  • To the staff:

I got a message today from ElvenArcher with the title Invisible Mods: Hi! How have you been? Lately your mods won't show up in my downloads folder. And won't in the addons folder or ingame.

I responded that I'd like more specific information, such as which mods this problem happens with or whether they believe it a universal problem with all 50 of my mods. I mentioned that I could upload any one of them again, and that in the past there have been issues uploading mods and that I knew this as I was a beta tester. Hopefully this person hasn't found a bug, but it is a distinct possibility.

I will of course take action once I have more information from this person, but perhaps you people should look into things. My most recent upload was the redone version of Awesome Grenade Launcher and that was uploaded on May 1st.

    Cordially,

  • This is verbatim what ElvenArcher said to me yesterday:

"I'm great. When I download your magnificent m16, awesome auxiliaries, Terrific throwables, 10 shot super buckshot shotguns, 19 shot buckshot handguns, incredible hunting rifle, ultimate g3, sensational smgs, fabulous fn, astounding ak, All are non infinite ammo versions. I 'save as' to my download folders, the downloads window then pops up, I drag and drop the mod from the downloads folder to my addons folders, then the mod file disappears from my 'downloads' folder and show up in the addons folder which has never happened before.

Normally after the file has downloaded; I go into my download folder and then double click the mod folder to open it and then drag and drop the file to my addons and a copy will stay in the downloads folder while an extra will show up in the addons. Lately when I go to clean my download folder, mods would be in there but not this time; It's completely empty. I don't have this problem with mods created by others. Steam workshop versions is working well. Hope I made sense."

NOW, I download one of my mods from his list (sensational SMG's, which was last uploaded last January.) And guess, what? ElvenArcher is right! I downloaded sensational SMG's to the desktop, scanned it for viruses, and the moved it to my addons folder. It is in fact "invisible" and another strange thing I noticed is the downloaded files is a VPK, as opposed to a ZIP file which turns into one after being extracted. I've seen some strange things over the years, but this is one of the strangest bugs I've ever seen!

Anyway, what I need to know is this: the mods work for me and they work on Steam but obviously there's a bug but was it fixed? What I mean is I recall there being bug with the beta website that corrupted mods in the past, and I'm wondering if that bug was fixed AFTER I uploaded this and other mods or if it is still there? I could re-upload all 50 of my mods I suppose, but I don't want to do that unless the bug is fixed first because it won't do any good! And I don't want to re-upload them with the non-beta website obviously because hopefully the beta is about to go online, and I should be testing that website by using that website.

iLL, or somebody else on the staff tell me what the deal is with this please, and if I need to re-upload my 50 mods and please get back to me soon!

    Sincerely,

    AlfredENeuman

  • Hello AlfredENeuman,
Please give us some time to investigate this situation and get back to you. We had a scenario where .zip files were downloading as .vpk files however we thought we have corrected these files. We will look into this on Monday and will know more details, we may be able to correct these files without any action needed on your end. This would have happened to a very limited amount of files and can be corrected.

Please send a few URL's where you experienced the problem so we can test these specific files to get more information.
    Thanks!

  • Well, it was ElvenArcher who had trouble not me as that was the person that downloaded some of my mods. I did download one of them to verify the trouble was happening though- it was Sensational SMG's. I guess I can get you that URL and of course I'll get you the list of mods that person tried that had issues. I'm worried however, that ElvenArcher's list may not be the whole list of mods affected, as I released a total of 50 mods!

I'll play it by ear though and see if you or other staff members can solve this problem. I will, if I have to, upload mods again but only if you people tell me I must as it is quite time consuming to upload 50 mods.

  • Hello,
Provide us some URLS of confirmed issues and we can look into this issue easier. If its a issue of .zip files being named .vpk we can resolve this issue and there is no need for you to re-upload anything. We can likely resolve all these types of problems automatically.

    Regards

  • iLL:

Alright, here is the URL for Sensational SMGs: https://beta.gamemaps.com/details/19913

The other mods in ElvenArcher's list are: Magnificent M16, Awesome Auxiliaries, Terrific Throwables, 10 Shot Super Buckshot Shotguns, Incredible Hunting Rilfe, Ultimate G3, Fabulous FN, and Awesome AK.

Since Sensational SMG's was last uploaded on January 2nd, my guess is the other affected mods were also uploaded in early January. After all, I retired again on January 19th and only one mod has been uploaded since then- a remake of Awesome Grenade Launcher that never would have happened except Argos_Amarok came up with an idea on improving it, and even provided the code to do so.

Going forward, while I reserve the right to remake some of my 50 mods, there WILL NOT be a 51st one- I intend to stay retired this time.
Once Back 4 Blood comes out (October 12th) I suspect Left 4 Dead 2 will no longer remain the IMMORTAL game that it is.

I hope this helps and thanks for addressing this problem- I know you are busy!

    Sincerely,

  • The issue with the ZIP files appearing as .vpk should be fixed now. I think that issue was causing all the symptoms you described, but if there are further issues let us know and we can look into them some more.

  • Hello Computator:

Thank you very much for letting me know!

And I'm glad I'm not going to have to upload any of my 50 mods again (though I will if you say that's necessary, but it seems to me you are saying it is not.)

    Sincerely,

  • Computator:

I found a bug, or to be more accurate, I discovered that a bug I found long ago and reported is still there.

If you try to find a survivor mod (I'll use Bill as an example), and click on the name Bill to narrow things down to Bill replacements here's what happens: if you go to the second page, because you don't choose to look at anything on the first page you'll see that you are one page two. However, you'll also see an extra number "1" to the left of the 1 representing the first screenful of mods.

I don't know if this shows up if you just click on Survivors without narrowing things down to a specific survivor, but I'd check that out too.

    Sincerely,

  • Yes, everything is fixed and you don't need to reupload anything. The pager bug is a known issue with all of the pagers on the site. Thank you for the reminder though and we should be able to get it fixed along with some of these other bugs soon.
