Conclusion:
For what it is, this skin is fantastic! It just needs those FPS arms! Very totally super awesome rad man, nice work!
Pros:
-Beautiful scenery and nice to look at. -Interesting environmental effects
Cons:
-Level length irregularity -Invisible walls everywhere! -Sloppy prompts (if there were any) -An unbearably LONG gas tank finale -Strange, wonky black flashing on the first level - Custom music? Radio station talk show hosts? Thunder but no rain? I'm confused.
Conclusion:
The environment that the designer crafted for this map was very interesting and visually appealing, however interaction with the environment was tiring. Many levels of this map were filled to the brim with invisible walls of what seemed to be low walls of junk that are easily hopped over by anyone. This made the map rather linear and very frustrating. I was pleased with some cool things the players had to manipulate to continue, but there were very few director hints throughout. The director hints that were shown seemed to lack effort as they were not capitalized and punctuated correctly consistently. In all honesty, the lack of effort shown in those hints was a general reflection on the rest of the map. Right from the get-go this map bothered me. The first level has some sort of random black flicker whenever I look around, although it sort of freaks me out (thinking it is some zombie's shadow or something) it eventually just becomes annoying. I heard nice music and apparently a radio station host... but I wasn't sure why they were there. Custom music and voices are an awesome addition to any custom campaign, but there needs to be some sort of reason! Custom voices and characters need to draw the attention of the gamer as they listen to some human element and evidence of other survivors chatting away on a radio. It fits well in many scenarios, especially when the players find themselves in the middle of an apocalypse with no hope of survival on their own. This map did not utilize those techniques at all. The finale also frustrated me to no end. 16 gas cans were spread far and wide across a giant map. It was long and tedious, much like how I felt during the entire campaign. My final thoughts: I like a map that engages me and has a nice "feel" to it. It needs to have some gripping story or motive for the survivors to win. I felt the exact opposite of that. Every time I died, I had to will myself to try again just to finish off this map to write a review. After I died with 15 cans in the boat I felt no motivation to continue and quit. This map looked nice, but it was slow and painful to play... worse than any death sentence.
This review was posted before the latest release.
Pros:
-Immersive atmosphere that's constantly foreboding and dark (much more fitting for killing zombies). -Lots of dialogue that fits nicely with the atmosphere. -Awesome soundtrack! -Seems like it occurs right after Crash Course (with the fancy armored truck)! Awesome continuity! -Perfect plot! Undeniably well set up direction and goals. Along with plenty of signs to help. -Tons of branching paths and bonus rooms with goodies = lots of replayability. -Unforgettable levels. -Pipebombs. Pipebombs everywhere.
Cons:
It might be just my bias... but I have a lot of trouble coming up with even one negative comment about this game.
Conclusion:
This map is the greatest thing to happen to L4D2 DLC, hands down. Right from the get-go, you are treated to tons of custom dialogue referencing the aftermath of the Truck Depot finale in Crash Course. In fact, the actual escape vehicle is right next to you! Next you are treated to a wonderful gem that had me laughing, a classic Francis one-liner: "I hate Canada." Each level is full of undead, scattered evenly and fairly throughout. The levels are cohesive and are perfect continuities of each other. For me, the determining indicator of a good campaign is its plot and believability. As soon as the game starts, the Survivors are given two conflicting signs promising safety. Pushed forward, their trust in the signs, the Survivors see a landscape of destruction, but custom dialogue and well placed "safe room" signs promise safety in the future. With this as motive, the Survivors are sure to want to continue to fight all the danger which lurks ahead in the dark night or near pitch black tunnels, the crying of a witch reverberating off the walls. Another factor that makes a campaign stand out are its unique levels. The giant mansion with the helicopter rescue concludes in a way that further motivates survivors to continue through the night, with tangible proof that there is some hope of rescue in the future. The finale has a cornfield from which zombies pour out, a tribute to the Hard Rain campaign which recalls the fear of blindness to what lurks within. This map is fantastic and deserves the 10/10 that I gave it. After all, considering the many things that Francis proclaims to hate during the campaign: tunnels, trains, Canada... there is something that he notably leaves out: mountains.
Pros:
Prepare yourself for the Spanish Fiesta!! This map is immersive, fun, and engaging! I love the detail and effort the authors put into it, right down to the futbol player jerseys! Awesome finale!
Cons:
Easy to get turned around on the first run Bots tend to get stuck on the finale/have trouble walking across the narrow catwalks and planks.
Conclusion:
I loved this map. Right from the get-go starting in a church with the faint crying of a baby, I felt chilled and anxious to fight some zombies. Stepping outside I found myself in a detailed, ruined city of Barcelona. The maps in this campaign really came alive as even parts of the terrain were my enemy (as a car falls from the broken highway above and onto one of my dear survivor friends. There were some points where the game didn't push me to go forward as much as I would have liked--there wasn't the sense of urgency in some places in the campaign where I think there should have been. That being said, the entire campaign is wrapped in a nice, neat, action-packed and destructive bow with a finale that is unforgiving and happily sends tanks your way right in the spots you don't want them. It took us quite a few tries before more than one of us survived that self-proclaimed Spanish Fiesta! This campaign must be downloaded by every L4D2 player out there.
