We will look into the one star with no review and see what the situation is. As for replies, users shouldn't have the ability to reply to reviews from the current live site and this will need to be disabled in the days ahead. When a user writes a review, it can only be replied to 'once' by the publisher. This update has been implemented on the beta in the past 24 hours. Now it seems it needs to be disabled from the live site.

The positivity threshold mentioned ensures players write a balanced amount of positive reviews. For example, if you write 3 reviews and you rate them all under "5/10"; The next time you go to write a review it will say 'Your account has written too many negative reviews. To continue, write a positive review for something you like!"

  • This "positivity" concept seems clever. After all, trolls write nothing but NEGATIVE reviews and or NEGATIVE comments.

  • @mr. iLL:
So it means that the ability for other user to reply a review is a bug in the old site then. Here's one proof about the bug in case if you want to investigate:

    The map link: https://www.gamemaps.com/details/27093 .

For the positivity threshold, that's a good idea to give limit to continuously low-rate review posts. Btw how does this threshold work? Is the threshold reset after a user gives a new review with good rate? If that's so, probably adding some countermeasures might be necessary. For example, I could imagine one of possible exploits like this:
"Troll reviewer posts one-star reviews several times on uploaders/ authors he hates > he hits threshold > he puts a random good review on a random mod to reset threshold > he continues posting a bad review on the targeted uploaders/ author > he hits threshold > he repeats the steps to reset & post bad review infinitely"

If the threshold uses a cooldown, like 24 hours of cooldown to put next 3 low-rate reviews, probably the feature exploit would still be controllable as the troll reviewer needs at least next day to put other 3 bad reviews, but this would only give delay. & if a troll reviewer has already made some new accounts that meet the requirements of posting a review, he could switch accounts to continue giving troll reviews while waiting for the cooldown.

Well, probably I was just thinking too much about the potential bug exploits. At least those were what bug exploits I could imagine when remembering how cunning the troll reviewers were in the past. I still don't know exactly how the threshold works, as so far I only gave 2.5 stars once when testing the new review feature, & still don't know what would happen after hitting the threshold & then posting a good review. But I hope that those could give some ideas to build some countermeasures if needed.

Yeah that's a bug on the live site and the reply button will be removed or disabled shortly.

Each member that writes a review has an average score. I don't know the official numbers, but if your score drops below let's say 50%, your account will be limited to writing positive reviews only.

For example, if a member writes 50 reviews, their account may look like this.

    Total reviews: 50
    Positive reviews: 82%
    Negative reviews: 18%

In this event, the user is not limited or restricted. However if the positive reviews drops to 50%, it will trigger the account to be restricted from writing negative reviews until the positivity % increases.

  • Btw, about these threshold rules on review, is it possible to apply on uploading a mod as well? It was just a coincidence that in L4D2 section, there happened "mod flood" caused by 2 members doing rapid uploads, & because of that most mods were buried down (it's been few days since the mod flood happened). I found out that this threshold feature probably would look useful to limit rapid upload as well. Like, for example, max rapid upload limit for each member is 4-5 if they rapidly upload some mods in less than an hour. If they reach the threshold, they'll temporarily be unable to upload a mod until certain cooldown or certain conditions are met. Something like that.

Or probably there are already some new rules related to rapid uploads?

  • There are no plans to limit the rate in which users wish to publish content. However there are plans to allow publishers to upgrade their listings from the credits shop. These are permanent upgrades and more details will be explained in the near future. The idea here is; Users will need to be selective on which items they upgrade because it costs credits. Because our core principal is based upon allowing users to freely upload and publish content, we would not want to hinder that growth. Rather, we encourage more publishers to join and begin moving/publishing their content to GameMaps if they haven't already. (This often times requires moving and uploading a lot of files)

  • I do not understand this concept iLL. It seems like you want upgrades discouraged because you think it will lead to more mods made from scratch. But there's a problem: the more mods you make the more difficult it is to come up with entirely new concepts that haven't been done already.

Let me give an obvious example: during my 5-year modding career I released 50 mods BUT I recreated almost all of them. Now I could have released them in such a way as to consider them entirely new mods but if I had done that instead of 50 mods on the website, there would have been almost 150! So for example, my mod Left 4 Dead 2.75 could have been named Left 4 Dead 2.75 and later Left 4 Dead 2.75 II and eventually Left 4 Dead 2.75 III. This would have taken up 3 spots instead of just one, but probably been in my best interest but NOT the best interest of the modding community.

If I had done that it would have "buried" other people's mods in the particles section and some of the other sections to the point it would have discouraged others from releasing mods. That is precisely why I did NOT operate that way- the way I saw it the more authors of new content the better because ALL of us are eventually going to retire.

Perhaps its a misunderstanding or miscommunication. People who are using publishing in unorthodox and unintended ways is a different scenario altogether. These scenarios are mainly human error or a misunderstanding of the platform operations. The previous post has no relation to these types of activities. There are new features in development to help curate and detour unorthodox publishing. These are details the team has not fully concluded and I am not able to mention much about.

I'm not sure if that make sense but I did my best

  • I see other solution to somewhat prevent situations like "floods of mods" without limiting publishers or adding upgrades in shop. One way would be to promote on main page and game page mods based on their quality, attention and some other factors. Not based only on recently added or updated. Separate trending, recent and updated mods by adding them in different sections. Add filters in those sections for example to filter recent mods by who uploaded them.
There are also factors that have to be taken into consideration such as how main page and game page is designed to expose content or how mod thumbnails look like for example mods with colorful and nice looking image in thumbnail will bring more attention than mods with image made in Paint.

Btw did anyone else noticed that St. Patrick's Day advertisement image, Left 4 Dead safe house door, have crosshair under "green room" text?
