Current state of gamemaps.

  • I just want to share this since it's mostly a personal opinion , first and foremost i appreciate the developers and site owners working so well on a platform that puts the steam workshop to shame , mostly because it gives us more option and power on how we like to share or work and expand our mod.

but lately everytime i revisit this site , i think about how it just aims to do to many things at once without standing out anymore it supports so many games that honestly i know it's rude no'one cares or mods for we have a whole section dedicated for mods for consoles , nintendo , mobile etc that are literally empty but spammed with every single title imagineable on a thumbnail.

people spam mods all over , the website does not excel anymore at the specific thing it was aimed for back in the day , showing off and sharing maps and campaigns from most source games , you open up the site and you are bombarded with half assed mods , weapons , skins and scripts.

It's like instead off being game"maps" anymore it turned into just a expanded steam-workshop where people throw whatever on the site for whatever reason.

It's something i just notice everytime and i think it would be better to specificly focus on what the website does best sharing maps/campaigns from the most popular games like source.

  • Well, nowadays there are less & less people making custom maps/ campaigns, so focusing only on maps/ campaigns wouldn't be good, I think, because that would make a site have only very few contents to show. As for mods, when I compare gamemaps to steam workshop, gamemaps still has more organized mods. For example, if you search for "campaign" or certain mode like "coop" in workshop, you'll find not only maps but also tons of unrelated mods mixed in them & that's frustrating as you'll have to look one by one on those mixed contents. But if you search "campaign" or "coop" here in gamemaps, there will show maps related to "campaign" or "coop", & only very few mods unrelated to maps will show up.

So, I think focusing not only on maps but also on mods & other things is the right decision to do. It still provides maps/ campaigns, & visitors can still search on map section if they only want to search maps (at least that's what I usually do when I want to search only specific mods or maps). Having more choices can attract more visitors to come. Well, at least that's my opinion.

  • Gamemaps has FAR TOO MANY spam mods to be sure (especially by l4dkk), but is still superior to Steam where finding anything is a pain. I agree with kurochama, that gamemaps had to evolve.

Solved does make a legitimate point in that gamemaps, which I've been using since 2015, and where I released 50 script mods between 2017-2021 has become more like the Workshop. But that was necessary and overall the right move.

I've dealt with the people at Steam and at gamemaps and there's no comparison- the people at Steam are a real pain often because the system relies on a 3rd party automated system for policing purposes. So eventually you'd be dealing with humans, but at first you might have a mod blocked even if no rule was violated. In contrast, if I ever had a problem the people at gamemaps (especially rayman1103) were VERY responsive and fair!

That said, solved is right in that the mod spamming problem is getting a lot worse and something must be done about it! It's getting a lot harder for example, to find a SINGLE character replacement if you don't specifically know what you are looking for and are just scrolling. The reason is there are so many spam mods where all 8 characters are the same (l4dkk's specialty, even that person has once in a while made something else over the years and has talent), that must be "passed" if you will to get to anything else.

This problem also exists if looking for weapons THAT DON'T HAVE A SCRIPT l4dkk added to it. l4dkk's specialty is making mods from derivative works, and that means there are so many of that persons releases that basically l4dkk has been able to mostly take over the Left 4 Dead 2 section of the website. This has lead to some big names in modding like Funreal NEVER releasing anything new on this website, because they figure there's no point because they'll release something and 5 minutes later 10 spam mods will be released and then nobody will even notice their mod.

I still think a section of the website just for requested mods, which many of l4dkk's releases are, makes a lot of sense because it would solve this problem.

    Have a nice day everyone.

We appreciate all your feedback, let me touch on a few points in regards to content quality.

Our goal is to provide a service that allows users to publish custom content for any game they wish. We want developers and players to be ambitious, and have fun modifying whatever their hearts desire. Providing a multi-platform (PC, Xbox, etc..) with a full set of games allows more innovation. Without these abilities, ambitious goals and innovative ideas would be restrained and less likely.

Because the development of GameMaps is quite extensive there is a lot of time spent in core developments rather than ensuring content quality / filters. The 'content quality' phase will happen once the Beta is fully released, stable and the core service is running smoothly.

Content quality is more of a broad term that doesn't just factor in what's published, but it also factors in filters, settings, and algorithms to make what your looking for easier to find. Rest assured, content quality will become a primary focus in the near future.

    Hope this addresses any concerns!
    Again, thanks for the feedback.

  • I would suggest putting a limit on how many mods people can upload a day , It would certainly fix the spam problem since it is technicly impossible to create and upload that many mods at once in all those different categories if they where made from scratch or where some effortwas put into it and not just a reupload or copy/paste or spam mod.

Maybe something like a point system where you get 3 points a week , each point is a upload if it reaches 0 you need to wait untill next week to replenish these points to be able to upload again.

Certainly will fix the spam issue by a mile just setting these restrictions.

  • @solved:
That's a good idea. & a mod spam also just happened recently on L4D2 main page. Actually some members have ever suggested something like cooldown timer during uploading several mods at once & about giving upload limit at certain time/ day. AlfredENeuman is one of them who also has been keeping reminding about the mod spam. But unfortunately, the mod spam still happens until now. Probably admin & staff are still trying to find the best solutions for this mod spam problem.

  • Part of the problem is, of course, that as long as the website is in still in beta (I was hoping it wasn't, but it is) the programmers are going to focus on finishing the website before solving any other problems. I, however, think this problem is so HUGE that it should be solved IMMEDIATELY.

I appreciate the fact that kurochama and some others, such as solved, are making their voices heard on this and please keep it up!

So, what is the best solution? Personally, I don't think it has to be complicated at all: if a person could only upload one mod or UPDATE to a mod every 72 hours it would help a lot, wouldn't it? Also, as I've said before there should be a a section just for requested mods. iLL has made it clear to me in the past that l4dkk is going to be allowed to continue to make mods from other people's mods, and there are others doing that too no doubt. Well, if those mods were automatically put into a special section instead of on the home page when released it would prevent new mods from getting buried because somebody uploads 10 mods five minutes after a new mod is uploaded.

This is exactly what happened to me during the release of my last 10 mods before retiring, and even though some of those mods were some of my best ever they flopped anyway. And the assumption that could happen to anyone is the reason why a lot of legendary modders (Funreal is a perfect example), put their stuff on the Steam Workshop but no longer put it here!

The Left 4 Dead 2 section has basically been taken over by one person to a great extent, l4dkk, and something has to be done about it! Just try finding a character replacement for example, without knowing what you are looking for: you'll have to go past an INCREDIBLE number of mods to get past l4dkk's mods where all 8 characters are the same characters. This fact discourages mods being made in the first place, and the huge number of mods from derivative works are in other sections too such as the weapons sections where l4dkk has added scripts to a lot of weapon model mods made by others.

A member, I can't remember their name (sorry about that), recently complained of crap mods everywhere and I hate to say it but they have a point we have too many mods that aren't exactly original around.
