  • Cool idea but bad execution

So after I stumbled upon this custom campaign randomly I was very happy. Cause I love Alien movies. I watched them all, including those modern abominations, but only classic movies stood strong. But it's not about them here so I will get back on topic further down the line. I also played many old retro video games based on Alien and Aliens franchise, and there is a good and bad representation of it, but I never played Aliens Trilogy. I mean the original game on PS1. Because it was only on PS1 and not on PC. But I watched the playthroughs on youtube and it looked fine I guess. So I decided to try this custom campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 out to see, if it were any good. And here is my thoughts about it.

The campaign is good but it is very far from perfect. Because, there is no variety in what you do. You just wondering around dark labyrinth of corridors, trying to figure out what to do and that's it. There is nothing else to it. There is no signs that would tell you, where you should go. Like, you don't have to put a message on the screen to tell player where to go. Just put some signs, to show the path to the player via environment and that would do it. No interesting events that would separate this campaign from many other mindless representations of it's type, nothing like that. And then again, if that was not enough then your AI teammates almost always gets stuck. I don't know on what map I quit playing this campaign, cause I got so tired and frustrated of it that I couldn't continue playing. But I stopped after the elevator, that goes below the floor and you have to go down there and turn ON the panel. I did that, and when I got up, my teammates got stuck down there, refusing to get up with me, and when I got out, I got attacked by Hunter and killed. And since I didn't wanted to repeat all that mindless walking through boring labyrinth of corridors, I just quitted the game. Because, while you are winning it is fun to play, but right after you get killed and have to start over, the amount of frustration, anger and hate knows no bounds. Especially when you know, what this campaign is and how boring and mindless it is.

Also, from other cons that this campaign has, I would like to point out the lack of variety of weapons. And yes, I know that this was a thing in original Alien Trilogy game, but it doesn't work for Left 4 Dead 2, because this game was not made for that specific gameplay in mind, via configuring the pacing to specifically match Alien Trilogy type of gameplay. Thus why lack of variety of weapons, especially when there is shit tons of enemies on the screen, makes it even more frustrating to play. Especially in my case, when I also installed some Aliens themed mods, and iconic Aliens pulse rifle was modded over M16 rifle in my case. Cause I wanted to use that rifle but I can't because, instead of that rifle I got freaking SMG and Pump Shotgun, including with Magnum Pistol and throwable explosives and that's it. Sure, there is a grenade launcher that spawns every now and again, but in these tight corridors, I doubt that you can use it without harming your stupid AI teammates that always gets stuck and killed.

But I like this campaign A LITTLE BIT. Just a little bit. Cause it has the potential if done right. But here it is not the case. And despite how very little I like this campaign, after I stopped playing it, I have had massive headache. So yeah, here is where I end my review, cause I have to take some pills to calm my headache down. So yeah, in conclusion I rate this campaign as 4 out of 10. Cause like I said, the potential is there, but the execution is very bad.
