In-depth feedback and suggestions.

  • So I tested thoroughly new beta site and while the new design(more on that later) is nice there are still bigger problems that require attention.
First I want to address those problems that hunts Gamemaps for years and I hope they will be fixed in Gamemaps 2.0.

    1. Content protection
The biggest issue with Gamemaps is lack of any content protection against thieves. This issue should be a highest priority for any modding site. On the contrary Gamemaps now helps thieves by having social ban and comments removal feature. Thieves can silence people who speak about stealing.
What must be implemented is not just reporting feature, but proper DMCA system. An overall effective protection against stealing. Take example from Gamebanana. Gamebanana first option is flagging system(they even encourage to use it first) that notify admins that mod or user is possibly breaking site rules. Then second option is reporting. Admins have also gagging system that blocks user from certain sections and features. And Gamebanana supports DMCA claims.
Lets say for example if someone steal a mod on Gamemaps, then with such protection users can flag or report it and original author can fill DMCA form. If DMCA is requested then on stolen mod page there would be yellow box on top with message that this mod has been reported with DMCA for this and this reason where reason would be available to choose when filling the DMCA form. Additionally perhaps downloading that mod would be disabled when that yellow message appear. And until admins take actions this message will not disappear. Flagging and/or DMCA claims would alarm admins in admin panel and via email.
But heres another problem that needs improvement. Communication. Communication with admins for many years is very poor. Admins respond takes too long, making topics on now removed forum about stealing ended with insults and harassment. The only way now is to ask Rayman on Steam but his respond takes time too. So there have to be admin available who will at least within 24 to 48 hours respond to DMCA claims. Take also in consideration that people could abuse DMCA takedowns or falsely accuse someone. So before even filling DMCA form show information that such behavior will result in permanently banning user account(and IP to prevent from making another account) and removal of all his uploaded mods. There should be also possibility to counter claims.
I could talk and talk how DMCA should work and what mistakes to avoid, so lets just move on to the next point.

    2. Community behavior
Second important aspect is community behavior. If we want to have a nice community then first we have to permanently ban and remove a parasite that is Huck/Herbius and his buddies. Pretty much every drama in past years that I have seen on forum, in comments section and reviews has been because of him and his reuploads. And speaking of reuploads. I'm not a fan of these. Steam workshop is flooded with those so keep Gamemaps clean. There is no point in heaving multiple uploads of one campaign/survival just because original version don't work on his server. So all his "fixed" versions should be removed. Worth to mention that he abuses my previous issues with Gamemaps. Like Trunten said in other topic "..it's best he's removed from this community along with the others".
And its not like there wont be thieves when he is gone. Another will show up so keep Gamemaps free from this people.
Also comments section should be free from insults and unnecessary drama. Users have the right to leave bad review and/or negative comment, but insulting and harassing the author of the mod or other users should not be acceptable.
In general stealing, abuses, insults, harassment and behavior that breaks site Terms of Use should be properly taken care of.

I would like iLL and other admins to address this issues. Content protection, communication and parasite. What and when specifically you plan on doing with above problems?
Now my suggestions and improvements from testing Gamemaps 2.0.

    3. Crediting
The current crediting system needs much improvement. Changing text from Uploader and Author to Publisher and Developer don't eliminate the problem that uploader don't need to properly credit developer in Developer field. I suggest to check first if developer name is already in Gamemaps user database. It would work the same way when adding new mod, you search for a game or tag to add and this dropdown list shows up. For example lets say I want to credit Rayman. In Developer field when typing first letter, R, a list would show of all usernames in Gamemaps who nick starts with R. Then next letters would narrow down number of usernames until I see Rayman. I can click on his name on that list and it would automatically add to Developer filed. But if I typed Rayman2 and he is not on the list then Developer field would leave it as it is. Now in the mod page if its Rayman then clicking on nick would redirect to his profile page and if its Rayman2 then it would be just text without html link.
Another great option would be to send email notification when someone credited developer in Developer field. This would also work as notification of stolen content if the developer don't want his work being uploaded again.

    4. Donations
Do NOT add donations for moders please. Thieves will abuse this feature for example Helms Deep situation. Add feature that users or guests can donate only to Gamemaps to support the site.

    5. Endorsements
This is very nice function that I suggest to add. Users could give endorsement to moders by giving a thumbs up in mods page. This would show developers how much their work has been appreciated. Sort of like on Youtube but without adding to liked list.

    6. Notification system
I prefer to get email notification if someone send me a private message. Getting emails when someone posted a comment could turn into spam in email so maybe we could have settings that allows what notifications would be send to email.

    7. Available versions
Another improvement against stolen content and reuploading would be to show in campaign page a list of all available versions of that campaign that are on Gamemaps. So lets say someone uploads Helms Deep again so in every Helms Deep uploaded page on Gamemaps there would be a list of versions that are available. Also when another version has been added to the list send notification to developer whose mods are on the list so if they want they can take appropriate action.
This feature would be visible only for Developers and/or Publishers.

    8. Mod upload date
Personally I would like to know when mod was added. Above "Updated" you could add "Uploaded" text and date when it was uploaded. This shows how long mod is on the site.

    9. Don't bump mod when updated
I don't know if this changed in Gamemaps but updating mod was bumping it to the first place in mods list so its visible on main page. I don't think this is good idea because it looks like a new mod. Instead just notify users about the update in Gamemaps 2.0 new feature Available Updates.

    10. Removing comments from comments section
Right now removed comments will show message "This message has been removed by...". I suggest to improve this. Specify if user or author deleted it, so removed comments or replies would show message "This message has been removed by user/author/developer/publisher.".

    11. Reviews
While reviews has been abused in the past I don't advise possibility to edit or remove them by publisher or developer of the mod. They could remove only bad reviews to have higher ratings.
Also I suggest to add limit for minimum characters in reviews. Maybe 25 or 50.

    12. Private message system
I suggest to send emails to users when new message is received.

    13. Design
I like the blue color theme and font style. They fit together well. New logo is cool.
There is a lot more to say so I divided my suggestions and bugs into specific pages.
I found some bugs that I'm not sure if those were actual bugs, so I marked them "Bug?".

    Home page.
Bug? When I visit any page, menu on the left expands. Clicking "<-| filters" will hide it or show it.
Header area with Download icon and "My account" text. I suggest to add separated icon for notification about new messages, new comments and new post replies. Clicking on the icon would redirect to maybe dashboard or activity page. Also on the right side of "My account" add "Log out" text or button. So there would be two icons then "My account" text and then "Log out" text.
Number in Download icon should be more visible. Maybe change color or bold the font.
Bug. In mods thumb boxes if name of the mod is too long it overlaps the name of the game.
At the bottom in footer area there's "©2019 Game Maps". We have 2020 now.

    Discussion board.
List of topics looks nice and simple. Adding new topic works.
I'm not sure if everyone will know that the time and username on the right side of the topic is about last post, not about time when it was created.

    Topics page.
I don't know if some of the points below are intentional design or bugs.

On top left of the topic content there is a date and time. There is almost 7 hours difference from where I live.
    Text formatting don't work yet.
If its not my topic then blue "Reply" button on top is moved a bit to the left.
Between delete thread icon and profile avatar there is this transparent arrow pointing at avatar. Shouldn't this arrow have gray border like topics?
Reply textarea on the bottom is moved a bit to the left and not aligned with topics boxes.
When I try to edit topic and then save it I got red message "Permission denied" and on top there is this message:
    "A PHP Error was encountered
    Severity: Notice
    Message: Undefined index: poster_id
    Filename: controllers/discussions.php
    Line Number: 229"
When I try to lock topic, a popup window appear. I personally don't like this popup window because it look like a scam/virus popup.
I locked my topic and then try to unlock. I got redirected to blank white page with only text "Permission denied". Since this is my topic i should be able to unlock it. However I suggest to remove locking topic for users. Make it available only for admins and moderators.

    Dashboard area.
In the left menus the numbers in brackets should be more visible. Maybe bold the font or change to other color.
Admin data that is visible in user profile page could be added to dashboard too.
Add button that redirects to user profile. Right now to see my profile I have to go to one of my mods and click on Publisher link.
I have one notification and it is not shown in the left menu. Number with brackets is missing.
Donation settings. Like I said before, user donation feature is a bad idea.
The account settings is missing email change but I guess its for security reasons.
Bug? Activity page don't show my activity from discussions. I created "Testing text formatting" topic.
Bug. In Notifications page. Clicking on links that redirects to posted comment or to mod page redirects to page with info:
    "An Error Was Encountered
The URI you submitted has disallowed characters."
In Changelog tab. Would be great to see date and time when this changelog info was added.

    Download Manager.
A lot of bugs in here. I will explain how I manage to got them.
Bug. I was redirected from Dashboard by clicking on for example Download History. Then I wanted to change something in Available updates tab. Clicked the tab, but link in address bar didn't change its still Download History link. When I finished changes and refreshed page I was redirected to Download History tab.
Bug. In Available Updates and Watchlist if I uncheck "Notify when updated", it will be removed from the list and number in brackets changes to number of mods on Watchlist, despite that there are other updates. Refreshing page will show proper number of available updates.
Bug. Removing mod from History will properly reduce the number in brackets, but at the same time causes bug with numbers explained above. While refreshing the page will fix above bug, another bug appears. The number in History changes to previous number and mod that I just removed is not on the list. This bug is also in Dashboard in Download Manager menu box.
Bug? After downloading mod, it stay on download page, instead of going back to previous page. I can go back manually, but mod is still in Download Queue. Refreshing page will remove it.
BIG Bug. Note that this bug occurs only if mod is NOT on Watchlist and you download mod with "Notify when updated" box checked on.
I clicked download button on mods page. In Download Queue checked box on the left and clicked on green Download Selected button, downloaded mod and returned from downloading page to previous page. Since mod was still on the Download Queue list I refreshed page. It disappeared and four problems happened:
    - download button is still active and size of Download Selected changes from mod size(41MB) to bigger size(60MB).
    - in History tab one or two mods have checked on boxes on the left.
    - downloaded mod is added to Watchlist. If its my mod then in Watchlist it appear like other mods, but on the right side there is small trash icon. Clicking on it don't remove mod but redirects to Abandon mod page with old layout.
    - clicking on Download Selected button again I can download mod. Then refreshed page again and size of the mod increases to larger number(446MB) and number of available updates is reduced by few mods(two or three). Refreshed page again and bug repeated but this time I couldn't download mod because error shows up that file couldn't be found on server. I refreshed page again until number of Available updates is 0, but this time I was able to download first mod from History. Most likely this bug happens because in History/Watchlist tab one or two mods are being checked on to download.
Bug. History tab. Refreshing page sometimes makes games switch order.
I suggest to make Watchlist in another tab not bellow Available updates.
After downloading mod I suggest to redirect to previous page. Now it stay on downloading page.

    Privacy Policy page.
I want to point some important changes here. Since 2018 there is RODO regulation and this should be addressed in here. A lot of sites gives option now to change cookie settings. As far as I know this should be regulated by Gamemaps. We need to have a choice what information we want to send to third-party companies. You can get in serious legal troubles if you don't do this.

    Terms of Use.
I suggest to expand this page with more clear and detailed information. Specially that now there is no section on how original authors can protect their own content against stealing. Also some points don't make sense for example in point "2. Developer terms and conditions." there is a statement that "Content that is not allowed on GameMaps.com." is "Copyrighted content or content without due credit.". Most of the mods contains copyrighted content since models, textures and sounds are ripped from games. Same with "Use of trademarks without permission.".

    Profiles.
In user profile page there is a list of content added by this user. In Classic and Thumb view in those boxes I suggest to add more info about the mod. Instead of only "By [nickname]" change this to "Developer: [nickname]" then below "Publisher: [nickname]" and then what game it is. Not necessary, but separated updated and uploaded info would be good too.
In menu on the left there is Admin data at the bottom. If Admin data is not visible for other users then maybe move it higher, between User and User content menu boxes. Perhaps add more information in this Admin data.

    Comments section.
Comments looks ok, but I don't like how reply to a comment look like. Specially if its me because my avatar icon is on the right and on the left the box with text of my reply is farther than comment above. It looks like I made another comment not a reply. Maybe make the box with my comment shorter on the left.

    Adding content.
I didn't find option to add or change mod language. Not implemented yet?
Bug? When I was adding mod for Star Trek Armada the transparent background menu was black. Usually its blue.
Bug. When I finished adding mod that had added 4K image and very long name I got red bar on top with message "Error copying file screenshot(s)". Also on top of the page this error:
    "A PHP Error was encountered
    Severity: Warning
Message: copy(./img/addons/armada1/ss/long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_name_long_n_23331_1.jpg): failed to open stream: File name too long
    Filename: member_content/create.php
    Line Number: 1043"
Related bug. Mod was actually added to my list of mods and to Coming Soon in my profile, but it redirects to blank page. Check here:
    https://beta.gamemaps.com/details/23331

    STEP 1
While testing I try to add mod for Age of Empires 3 game. In Title field adding name, Mod, shows red message "Title exists". However in Age of Empires 3 there is no mod with name Mod. I assume this is on purpose to prevent the same mods name, but does it apply to all games? Or is this a bug?
Bug? Trying to add new game from left menus or when adding new map or mod redirects to old Gamemaps with 404 error page.

    STEP 2
Features section. I typed special characters, {}, and it allowed me to continue. Perhaps special characters in here are not really necessary.

    STEP 3
    Screenshots section.
Adding image equal or less than 100 pixels(image was 100x52) results in image shrinking to its size and positioning on top of image thumbnail. Also Gamemaps watermark is missing.
Adding image more than 100 pixels(image 101x53) results in image being stretched to image thumbnail size.
Adding image equal or more than 5000 pixels(image was 5000x2500) will not add the image, but will show red bar on top with text "Screenshot is required".
And Gamemaps watermark resizes depending on image resolution. The bigger the resolution the smaller the watermark.

    STEP 4
Bug. I cant remove tags. Clicking X to remove it don't work.
If I want to add tag with special characters for example name with brackets, Gamemaps(new), then nothing happens. But if I find tag from the list with special characters then tag will be added.
Bug. Difficulty tags have numbers and brackets. Adding this tags will also add those numbers and brackets.

    Release update.
    STEP 1
Im not sure about the .zip file support. On one side it allows to add other mods than .vpk but on the other it allows to add infected files or files unrelated to the site.

    STEP 2
I suggest to prevent from removing date and time from the changelog. Its important information and some people remove it.
Status section. I think there is a typo in text "Complete - Finished; but open to updates.". I think it should be "Finished, but". Not "Finished; but".

    You can check mod here:
    https://beta.gamemaps.com/details/23325

    Mods page.
Click on image thumbnail to zoom it. Images without description shows "Null" text under them.
When adding mod, on STEP 3, images equal or less than 100 pixels will shrink and reposition on top of image thumbnail. Here they properly resized to image thumbnail.
I added .gif but it does not animate.
Those lines under the screenshots could be a bit bigger to click it easier.
On the right side, like I mentioned before, add date when mod was uploaded.
Separate size of the mod from Updated date. So perhaps add "File size" below "Version" text.
Bug from STEP 4. Difficulty tags have numbers and brackets.
Bug. If the name of the mod is too long and includes spaces in between for example "Too long name" it will wrap up text in mods page. However typing it without spaces for example "Toolongname" will stretch page layout. See here:
    https://beta.gamemaps.com/details/23332
Bug? Videos on my older maps are set us featured. I can click on video in that first big picture. See here:
    https://beta.gamemaps.com/details/9449

    Content editing.
Buttons at the bottom "Save/Next" and "Close". While adding mod this setup is great, but when editing it's not. Personally I would prefer to have here "Update" button like in Tags and Changelog tabs.

    Content editing - Details tab.
Bug. When adding new mod typing too long name results in error(see "Adding content."). But when editing mod I can actually add too long name. Also text in editing pages will show in one line. It wont wrap.
Bug? Trying to add new game in Game field redirects to old Gamemaps with 404 error page.
I can change thumbnail image here or in Media tab by clicking on it. This could be unclear to new people. I suggest to add short info how to add it, similar to Screenshots section Media tab("Drag images to arrange the order.").
Like I said before crediting needs improvement(see "3. Crediting").

    Content editing - Description tab.
It would be nice to have here option to add link to Steam workshop version of the mod. On mods page, link to download could be below Map Details section.

    Content editing - Media tab.
Like I said previously, I suggest to add some info how to change thumbnail screenshot.
Unless 10 is the max limit of screenshots then I cant find option to add new one.
Bug. After adding video it redirects to Description tab.
Bug. I removed the video and try to add it again, but it redirects to Description tab and shows red bar on top with message "Video already exists".
Bug. In video thumbnail if name of the video is too long it overlaps buttons on the bottom of the box.

    Content editing - Tags tab.
Bug. I cant remove tags. Clicking X to remove it don't work.

    Content editing - Changelog tab.
Bug. Clicking on this tab from previous tabs redirects to old page with new beta version layout. Names in the tabs are different. Text above tabs is different. Also html link is different. It should be "/edit/[number]/5" not "/changelog/[number]".

I also want to address things that iLL mentioned in "New Gamemaps design feedback" topic.
iLL - "Allowing users to reward publishers. (pre-planning phase.)"
If publisher is a thief who stole someone else work then he gets rewarded. Instead of giving reward to publishers give reward only to developers.

iLL - "..we are still debating.. Do we display both the visitor and download count to visitors, or; Only let the visitors see the view count, while developers can see both stats."
My preference is to show only view count to visitors and hide download count. Let the developer/publishers see both stats.

iLL - "We are definitely aware of the constant bickering going on between a vast amount of users" and "When it comes to human behavior there is no 'off switch' that just simply fixes the problem" and "At the current time we have an account ban, that's all."
Account ban is your off-switch for constant bickering between users. Ban those who causes the problems.

iLL in his comment(10th comment) listed features that are coming. These features sounds great, but if they are given to the wrong people then its a disaster.

Someone mentioned site language. I think there are always going to be people who will write in other language than english. I rather suggest to translate website to other languages, but not with translator.

Lastly I have concern, and I hope I'm wrong about it. With recent Covid-19 there where restrictions and people stayed in homes. These gave some free time to do other things and maybe gave time to work on Gamemaps 2.0. Restrictions are lifted or going to be so maybe Gamemaps 2.0 development will stop. iLL even mentioned in one of the topics that he is in China.
Also it has been like over 5 years or even more when Gamemaps 2.0 was announced as work in progress. It took that long to make Gamemaps 2.0 to how it is now? I don't know how big Gamemaps team is but if its going to take another few years to finish the site then I suggest to hire someone to create Gamemaps site. There are companies that do this. You will have to pay for it, but better wait few months than few years.

Thats it for now. If I find more then I will add in this topic.

  • Wow. Text didn't wrap up. Cant delete or edit topic because of "Permission denied".

I will leave it as it is. As far as I know you can probably set in the code where text is suppose to wrap up.

    Content Protection

This area is definitely one of our focuses. You must also keep in mind that by running GameMaps for over a decade we have a lot of experience in this field, and we plan to curate our features based on this experience. Not every claim is a valid claim, and we must setup a system that does not cause disruption given someone wants to troll the site and cause chaos. For this reason, we must implement features that yield an improvement rather than make the users experience worse. There are various ways we can do this and we have already started planning and setting up the platform with an improved dispute and flagging system. As you mentioned in one of your examples, we are also implementing user privileges so we can disable certain features from certain members such as publishing content.

As for the DMCA and the whole copyright and creative commons, there is only so much that can be "legally" done by a developer. Just because someone takes a "Sonic the Hedgehog" model and imports it into L4D2 as one of the survivors does not give this user any rights at all. They do not own the trademark, they do not own Sonic, they don't own L4D2, and they dont own any rights to the distribution or modification of this mod even if they spent hours making it. This doesnt mean we will ignore the developers wishes, however we need to make decisions that are 'morally' right to create a free, fun and fair platform. This is just a rough example... In a legal sense, 99% of the developers do not own any rights to the content they publish and the content they publish can be re-distributed across the world wide web at a rapid pace without their permission. (This is the exact same situation for any platform, not just GameMaps.)

But like I mentioned, this doesnt mean we will ignore all the publishers requests... When it comes to these sorts of situations we must uphold the freedom of expression, freedom of content creation, and a fair content atmosphere. On the other hand, if someone downloads a mod, uploads it, and then falsely claims credit for the mod... of course we will remedy and fix this situation. One of the most common disputes that requires action is people is not properly crediting the developers or original author of mods.

The amount of work that goes into getting this smooth is quite extensive but we are definitely making progress. You will notice more changes over the next couple weeks towards this situation. This will include the ability to disown content, a resolution center, and the ability to request a transfer of ownership.

We always want our developers to have pride in their hard work and we will do our best to ensure they are taken care of even if it falls outside of the legal boundaries. Hope this makes sense!

    Community Behavior
    ---

This topic is actually quite sensitive... There is a 0 tolerance for harassment and threats in this day and age and anyone who breaks these rules will have to deal with penalties and even an account ban. We are working on a user privileges system (as I mentioned in the previous post) that will allow us to block a user from posting comments or discussions across the entire site.

We are definitely building our system to better handle and detour this behavior. Because the website is very large and robust, we can not review every single comment or discussion that is posted on the site. However there are various ways that I believe will greatly detour this behavior moving forward. One of the changes in the new GameMaps (currently working on now) is reviews is being completely removed from the platform. Instead, users will have a like/dislike system which the rating will be based on. This will dramatically reduce the number of complaints from developers and also eliminate the spiteful reviews. This also allows a much larger audience to rate content anonymously which would yield a more accurate rating overall. One last thing, is we will add a like/dislike rating to each individual comment or post, this will provide a clear picture that the community either agrees or disagrees with the said remarks.

As you may have noticed we launched a new feature for users to become game managers. The game managers will have much more power to moderate content in the game and provides additional oversight to ensure a fun clean atmosphere. This will help our efforts in keeping games up to date as well as ensuring the community is moderated appropriately.

    Crediting
    ---

This system is actually being improved as we proceed with testing developments. I have noticed a vast amount of room for improvement in this category. I do think you have a good idea with the auto-suggest for usernames when selecting a developer... For privacy reasons we would limit the auto suggest to only display accounts that have published content. If a user did not publish any content, they would not appear in the auto suggest list. Another feature on our 'to do list' is to allow publishers to disown content and remove themselves as the publisher entirely.

Currently we noticed there is a problem with crediting if you leave the developer field blank, it will automatically use the publishers name as the developer. This needs to be fixed so that the developer can be specified as 'unknown'. It seems many disputes come from publishers leaving the developer field blank, and then it appears they are taking direct credit for the content automatically. We can resolve this issue with some coding and a little ingenuity.

Although we may have this field setup in settings it is not actually used on the site yet. We are still reviewing ways on how to reward publishers and developers for their hard work. Although we may not actually use the donate feature, it is still useful down the road if our administrators want to reward specific users or let's say they win a contest or prize. As fo the community, I believe we will be using a token/credits system for allowing members to show their appreciation.

    Notification System
    ---

We do plan to have email notifications once the site is more or less bug free and officially released. As of right now our biggest concern is sending you 200 emails per day... hah... We will definitely allow you to select how and when you get a notification when this system is ready.

We actually used to have this displayed on the site awhile back. I believe we will bring this date back in the new details page by the time its completed. We are actually working on the details page at this current time.

As for the bugs and rest of the issues you've mentioned I would like to look into these problems in more detail and I will report back as they are fixed and you can give it another test / review. A lot of these bugs can be fixed pretty rapidly I believe so I will focus on this throughout the week. The current task on our to do list though is the details page, we really need to finish this page so we can proceed with fixing bugs and improvements as you mentioned above.

We greatly appreciate your feedback, this is definitely what we need to hear so we can better get this ready for an official release! We look forward to resolving many of these issues in a timely manner. The new GameMaps has been in development for a few years however the amount of changes to get to this point is astronomical, the core of the website is hundreds of thousands of lines of code. I think within a few weeks from today it should really start to shape up into a solid platform that can replace the current site.

In the meantime, we cant replace the current site until all these issues are addressed and resolved and thats why we have the beta. Again, thanks for your feedback and lets continue to work together to get this site into shape so it can be officially launched in the near future.

    Regards!

  • Thanks for the respond.

I do want to clear your statement:
"As for the DMCA and the whole copyright and creative commons, there is only so much that can be "legally" done by a developer. (This is the exact same situation for any platform, not just GameMaps.)"

From what I understood is that anyone who made mod for a game, dont own that game, dont own that mod, dont own content of that mod and have no rights to upload it anywhere. If its going to be uploaded then people who downloaded it have the right to reupload it wherever they want.

    What?

I am a little confused... I mean some of the disputes are from users who are taking existing models out of games and porting them into L4D2. Then someone else uses the same model, modifies it, or includes it in a different game or pack. It's rare this would create a problem between two publishers. They can always give thanks and credit original authors, developers and publishers but its not against the rules.

A few other things to touch on..

    ---
    Content editing.
Buttons at the bottom "Save/Next" and "Close". While adding mod this setup is great, but when editing it's not. Personally I would prefer to have here "Update" button like in Tags and Changelog tabs.

I agree completely. Based on my experience its a little frustrating when it takes you to the next step automatically. So I think adding an additional update/save button would be useful.

    ---
    Release update.
    STEP 1
Im not sure about the .zip file support. On one side it allows to add other mods than .vpk but on the other it allows to add infected files or files unrelated to the site.

Because we support an unlimited amount of games, the files for mods may vary. In addition to the install instructions. So we have to allow archive uploads. Although I do think it would be useful to support additional file formats. We also scan our uploads for viruses automatically. (+/- errors for false positives)

    ---
    Adding content.
I didn't find option to add or change mod language. Not implemented yet?

Yes the language select is not yet added. We will add this option while we are fixing some of the bugs and feedback mentioned above. ;)

Thanks for your feedback. We will start to resolve the majority of these issues and improvements very soon.

Maybe I misunderstood your previous post. Based on your Sonic example this is how I see it.
If someone uses Sonic model ripped from a game and imports it into L4D2 as mod then legally it does not give this person copyrights to the model and trademark and Sonic, but this person does own rights to their own mod.
This person do own rights to the distribution and modification of his own mod and can request takedown.
If someone else uses that Sonic mod in another game or mod pack then it doesn't give this someone rights to that Sonic mod. In this situation crediting is important. Original author of the mod may or may not like this and have the right to takedown mod that uses his mod.
If someone reupload only that Sonic mod, with or without changes, and don't credit original author then it is stealing. Same as above crediting is important and original author of the mod can request takedown if he like or not how mod is redistributed.
Of course game companies can takedown this Sonic mod, but that's rather bad image on them.

Its important to respect original authors wishes and if author request to remove a mod then Gamemaps should do it.

And owning L4D2 or any Steam game is a topic of its own.

  • Guest feature needs to go. Just ask Rayman.
Lately I've been a victim of stalking and harassment form it being abused.
Or at least, disable it by default... reviews suffer the same fate quite often.

    Crediting/permission/DMCA and whatnot...
I'd say at the least, since it's not going to be easy to verify who actually owns what...
Continue requiring proper credit at the least. Make it a requirement.
Keep the feature that also shows who uploaded it... to make it clear if they aren't the author.
Perhaps require a link to the original material, for example, if it came off of the workshop.
If an original author has a problem with it, allow there to be a way to report the item.
There needs to be a way for legit original authors/creators/owners to report unauthorized redistribution.
For example... HELM'S DEEP, which I'm still waiting for action taken on it here!

  • the point about social ban also being abused is a good one.
when I brought up Helm's Deep multiple times to you (JASON) and Rayman...
but I feel it falls on deaf ears or ignored.
I do not understand the hesitation for removing the unauthorized version I've contacted you about.
Especially when both myself and Rayman could (and have) verified which one is the legit version.
i've called out the thieves and of course they know of and abused the social ban feature to silence us.

  • with all due respect, actions speak louder than words.
Jason, you and Ray both got a lot more work left to do than you realize.
please take a bit more respect and pride in the community you've built here.
it's come a long way since the old "l4d maps" days and has quite a bit of reputation.
but it's also got a lot of unrealized potential and you need to address and take us seriously.
