      NOTHING attracting

      - Terrible design. All areas are empty.
      - Terrible map detail
      - Some textures are mixed up
      - Bugs
      - Unplayable if you don't fix it
Worse than troll maps. Do not waste your time on this.

A short campaign good to play for fun, but unplayable in normal way & it needs fixing first

I was curious to this "Home Front", so I tested this campaign. For early reminder, this campaign is unplayable, unless following my fixing instructions below. I'll list the instructions while mentioning the errors.
      .
There are at least 3 big errors that make this campaign unplayable so there are 3 big steps to fix. Hopefully this could also help the author figure out where to fix if someday he comes back. The first simple step to fix is extract the vpk using either "GCFScape" or "vpk.exe". Then follow these big steps:
      1. ) The "addoninfo.txt". Something in the addoninfo caused this campaign not visible in addon menu. The simplest way to fix it is by taking a look on other "addoninfo.txt" files in any working custom campaigns, & then doing the "copy-paste" on the whole texts. Then fill the name of the title, description etc. After that, the mod in addon menu section is visible.
      2. ) The "homefront.txt" in the "missions" folder. To make it simple to fix, just remove any spaces between the words on title, map names, like for example, change "Return Home" to "ReturnHome". This will make the campaign visible in the map selection menu.
      3. ) The landmark in the map 1 bsp file. Normally, if you play from map 1, once you enter map 2 all survivors will fall from the sky to death. This is caused by the wrong naming of the landmark on map 1. To fix it correctly in simple way, open Notepad++, then drag the map 1 bsp file ("return_home.bsp") to the Notepad++. Search with keyword "changelevel". Once you find it, look around it & search the word "Landmarker01". This naming is wrong, because the naming on map 2 is just "Landmark01". To fix it, rename the "Landmarker01" to "Landmark01", & then make the count of total of characters the same (for example, if total of characters is 5867576, make it same by adding some spaces. Otherwise, the game will crash. Like for example:
      before= "hammerid" "8750"
after= "hammerid" __"8750" (I gave underlines here because additional spaces are not visible here in the review & automatically edited to only one space between two words. Just change the underlines to space in the real file) ).
      4. ) After finishing fixing all those 3 files, repack the campaign by dragging to "vpk exe". Done, & the campaign will be playable.
      .
Well, to make some differences in the review, I'll review this one based on the playability after fix (after doing the steps I mentioned above). This campaign is kind of short. I finished in about 20 minutes. It's good to play for fun. The supplies on every map are enough. Bot navigation has some little problem on map 1, but other than that, it's good. They just don't pick weapons on map 1 unless players juggle the weapon near them. The in-game instructions are clear enough.
      .
Every map is kind of linear & easy to find the route. On the finale, survivors need to defend near some abandoned houses. The sensation feels like "Swamp Fever". There are some good spots to camp. The rescue unit comes few second late, so, survivors will face the 3rd wave of tank during waiting for it to come.
      .
In short, if the author fixed all those 3 big errors, this campaign would be playable. Although it lacks challenge, the short adventure is good to play for fun if you want to play a light campaign with less stress. I'll keep the fixed version to play later.
      • I got lost.... I have two files upon extrating the compressed downloaded file, one which is the add-on to be put in add-ons folder and the other is a notepad file with the link of this campaign here on this website it contains the line saying this file was downloaded from gamemaps, the campaign name and the link for it on this website. I can't find the addoninfo txt you are mentioning sorry i may have missed something :\ so if you can go a step by step with me i will be more grateful Thanks for your reply
      • When extracting a vpk file, there will appear one folder with the same name as the vpk file. Inside that folder, there's "addoninfo.txt". Just open it using Notepad++ to copy-paste the content from the other working custom campaigns. Or you can just extract "addoninfo.txt" from other working custom campaigns you like, like Back To School, City17 etc & replace the broken "addoninfo.txt" from Homefront with the working "addoninfo.txt" from other custom campaigns. Then, just rename the contents of "addoninfo.txt" like the title, addon description etc.
        .
In short, to fix all those 3 big problems, you need Notepad++. Then just follow the fixing steps I mentioned in the review & then when finished, repack the vpk by dragging the folder with the same name as the vpk file to the "vpk.exe".
      • taking a look on other "addoninfo.txt" files in any working custom campaigns.... How can i do it? Where can i find it?

Rating my experience with your not working campaign.

According to comments & reviews below, i can say that your campaign was working properly, but it doesn't now. So i downloaded it and tried twice to check the campaign but it never showed up as an add-on campaign. Wish you cared more about fixing the mistake you made to make it not working after it was. Good Luck
      • @Kurochama yes it feels really bad. i see you around recently trying those old incomplete campaigns like me XD You are doing great lol
      • If you're curious about how this campaign looks like, try to follow the few steps I mentioned in my review to fix it. Actually it's a good short campaign, but the author messed up when making some files. Probably it's his first campaign. & too bad that he's been long inactive since 2012.

This is Why You Learn to Spell

Maybe the reason this doesn't work is because the files are riddled with sloppy and lazy writing, from things that require quotation marks around them to having the wrong type of slash (\ instead of /) to having extra irrelevant stuff within brackets ({ }). You didn't even add a name to this campaign, it just shows up as 'Name' in the add-ons menu. Just look at the changelog here; there isn't a single update that doesn't have a typo. How do you expect your maps to work if you can't even spell the word 'until'? The .txt's in this campaign look like you put about as much work into it as your misspelled username. No wonder it doesn't load, you didn't proofread or check your .txt's and/or there's a problem with your .bsp's. Likely both. You obviously didn't test it and you clearly don't care, so why should anyone else?

      Pros:

-Excellent detail, this map really sticks out because of the very unique setting in this campaign.
-Exploration required, if you like a campaign with long maps and you enjoy exploring the environment this is the campaign for you
-Small areas provide a sense of 'claustrophobia' while fighting zombies.
-The dark and misty areas adds to the tone of the map.

      Cons:

      LOLOLOLOLOL

      Conclusion:

This map is really unique and feels like a real L4D map. The setting created makes an interesting and gloomy atmosphere. Exploring is a must in this campaign and is actually quite fun. There are errors, a few glitch spots, a few teaks required but it feels like a quality campaign. Please understand that, although the score that i'm giving is a bit low, the setting in this map demolishes any other custom campaign I have played.

End of results.
