Making custom campaigns fit file size limit / Splitting them into separate parts?

  • Is there a way I can downsize the files of a custom campaign I'm currently making? I currently don't have enough space as my last custom campaign took up a majority of the usual Left 4 Dead 2 file size limit.

I also noticed that this will be a growing problem in the future if I'd like to make more custom campaigns. I think the best way to go about it for now would be to split them into separate parts.

I looked on the Valve Developer Wikia for instructions, but there wasn't instructions to know how I can split the campaign, and also make them work together. Perhaps if I split it into smaller parts, and then upload it to the workshop, and have all of the saferooms connect together - Would that work?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Textures, models and sounds are taking the most size of the vpk file. You should create separate vpk with only those and release it as required file to download. This method is used a lot in Garry's Mod Workshop.

  • There might be some differences between the use of dynamic prop & static prop. I'm not a map modder so I'm not sure, but I ever saw some people talking about those two elements. Well, you can try to ask some map modders here that are quite active in making or fixing maps, like TimelordMagnum, Trunten, CRONO, or some chinese map modders that recently posted some campaigns. Maybe they know the best solution to cut the file size & reduce the number of entities so they won't exceed the entity limit.

  • Have you tried a compression utility like Winzip, Wrar, or 7zip?

  • @greenhood and @kurochama - I've recently learned the method of how to split the files and it's possibly the custom textures that I have that's taking up the campaign.

@goanna59 - Since this would be for Gamemaps and not the Steam Workshop, I could possibly try to use it as a .zip file rather than VPK. As it was for the Steam Workshop, then it'd be required to have VPKs only.
