Description
Work started on this almost immediately after finishing Pyroclastic -- had a really cool idea for a visual effect that I wanted to try out, and hence the bottom room was born. Not quite sold on the whole thing as a level, and it all feels a little off-grid since the hexagonal stuff propagated outward a bit (getting all the grate decals on the bottom floor passably lined up took a few hours between the two rooms), and I'm still having trouble with good sizing. Visually a little busier than my last two offerings, and the mid/top floors are geometrically somewhat tight. The connection between the 2nd floor and the observation area is kinda bad, but I'm lazy and it works well enough to be fun for a match or two -- might rework at a later date. Robot balance is wholly untested for now but eyeballing it tells me it's pretty fair if reflex-heavy. Not sure how the grates play out for real but initial tests show both sides have trouble hitting the other reliably.
This was touching 150 fps on my machine in a few test runs (this was with max shadows as the only visual option and customs usually run ~double that) -- lots of emitters and lots of shadow casters in that number, but it keeps the eye candy sweet outside of the main room. Decal switches could fix if it runs really poorly on other machines. This is 12 chunks and I had one errant reflection probe issue -- buttery otherwise.
Pretty classic case of 'this looked cooler in my head'...but quintupling the size of the bottom floor and making it really dark except for the glowing pools would only be fun to fly around in for a minute or so. I guess adding pillars to that larger version would keep combat interesting-ish? Hard to say without making it and even what's here was a ton of work to plan and execute.
Don't think I'll be totally satisfied with this one anytime soon, but it's ready to be played in the meantime. Welcoming feedback as always.
