How about a section that contains just requested mods?

  • Hello everyone:

I wanted to pass along an idea that I think would solve an old problem that I had when active and that modders are still having: they'll release a mod and then shortly thereafter a large number of mods will be released by a different person (usually l4dkk, since that person takes requests for "Only charactername" mods), thereby giving other people's mods too little exposure in the critical 48-72 hours after release. This was such a problem for me during the release of my last 10 mods before I retired, to this day, some of them are still flops despite the fact my last 10 mods were some of my best.

I wish I'd have thought of this before, as it is so simple: just put all requested mods in their own section so they aren't competing for screenspace with other mods. I'm not the only modder who's complained about this phenomenon (Floh for example, stopped putting mods on gamemaps due to this I suspect and there are others, such as kurochama who've also complained about this happening.)

In truth, I think this would actually lead to more exposure for new and or updated mods AND requested mods. Think about it: right now if kurochama releases an update to Merciless Survivor bots sometimes shortly thereafter l4dkk will release numerous Only characternamehere mods, thereby burying kurochamas mod. Now, of course kurochama could re-upload the mod with no changes and put their mod on top again, but that's hardly fair to some other modder who just released a mod 5 minutes earlier and now has their mod already moving down the screen where it is less likely to be spotted.

But with a different section for requested mods in that same scenario l4dkk's mods would be on top in that section of the website, while the regular mods section would be unaffected. It is a win for all sides since non-requested mods and requested mods BOTH get more exposure.

Another advantage of putting requested mod into their own section (or sections) is that it will make it easier to find character mods (or other type of model mods) when you don't specifically know what you are looking for, but just want a different character replacement you haven't tried yet for the next time you play Left 4 Dead 2. Right now, if you just scroll for a Nick replacement for example but didn't want JUST Nick replacements for all 8 characters it can take A LONG TIME to find something. And this discourages people from making character replacement mods in the first place, as they know a few minutes after they release their work l4dkk might just release a dozen "Only..." for all 8 character mods.

I used to almost always find character replacement mods and many other types of mods on this website, but I seldom find any here anymore and if that doesn't change I worry the Left 4 Dead 2 section of this website will basically end up well.. left for dead! Something needs to be done to encourage modders to put their stuff here instead of just on the infamous Steam Workshop. Maybe my idea will help.

  • That idea of putting requested mods to a different section is a good one. Yeah, actually it's kind of frustrating to publish/ update a mod & then suddenly there come tons of mods from one person flooding the page & burying most mods in one go. Some people solve this mod flooding problem by reuploading, but that might be just a temporary solution by members & not all members have more free time to reupload their mods anytime they have their mod buried by tons of other mods at once. For now there isn't any effective solutions from the site yet, probably they're still working on it.

However, there might be some problems about putting a different section for requested mods. One of the problem is the difficulty in detecting & sorting which ones are requested mods & which one are not. Some or even many requested mods might miss from detection if members put several tags & the other tags are detected instead of the request tag. Even in workshop, some people just put many less-related tags just so that their mods show up on most searching methods by sorting tags (like for example, there are many skin mods in workshops that have not only character/ weapon type of tags on them but also the tags about game mode like "Coop", "Singleplayer" etc on them. Probably the staff would have hard time to make that happen accurately.

If it's for alternative solutions for mod flood by one person, actually there are some, like:
    1. Allow only 2-3 mods by the same author/ uploader on main page when a member uploads many mods at once. Mods other than 2-3 on the main page will be hidden at least until mods from other authors/ uploader are piled above the first 2-3 mods. This might help other uploaders get a chance to have their mods on display on main page.
    2. Other alternative solution would be giving some cooldown timer when more than 3-4 mods are uploaded at once at almost the same time. At least this could give some pause/ break time for an author/ uploader while at the same time giving other authors/ uploaders a chance to have their uploaded mods on display during the cooldown time of another uploader.

Well, actually until recently, there's a mod upload delay on the old site. The recently uploaded mods won't show up in more than 5 minutes, & even it takes much longer than it should be normally. I don't know if that's a feature or just a leftover bug on the old site, but that could be helpful in some ways, like, the mod flood is also delayed because of that.

As for the dificulty problem in searching specific mods, I also agree. Back then, it was easier to search some mods especially some survivor skin mods, at least before the mod flood problem happened. Now it's harder to find specific mods, like specific survivor skin mods (like only for some characters like Nick, Coach etc), as there are many requested mods that put all survivors at once in one mods. More specific search features might need to be implemented to overcome that search difficulty problem, like keyword exclusion by adding "-excludedkeyword" (like what you suggested last time when we had another discussion about search feature problems), or specific sort methods.

Well in short, I hope that the admin & staff could take this your idea into consideration, at it could be helpful for many members here. Or at least they could do something about mod flood problem later, because I think several crucial problems started from there.

  • Well, since you are still an active modder perhaps your agreement something must be done will have more influence than my opinion on the subject. Thanks for supporting my opinion action must be taken!

You know, if you look on the Workshop you'll see that some big name modders that used to put things on this website too such as Funreal and Lt. Rocky never seem to put their mods here anymore. So, I think it is safe to say that you and I are not the only ones who worry if the release a mod here it won't be noticed.

  • Well, probably some other members have solved with their own solutions like reuploading a mod just as you said so they won't waste their time to put some complaints anymore. As for the rest of them, probably they either got caught by the mod flood & had their mods buried or they saw less responses came from members here compared to workshop so they stopped putting some mods here. Even many frustrating maps with tons of unreasonable death traps or tank traps get some comments there. One of the famous ones like Lt. Rocky might have similar thoughts, like probably he saw that workshop still had more active responses from people so he stayed in workshop, & probably some other thoughts like their mods not getting noticed here, just as you said.

Probably it would take some time so that more people will pay a visit to gamemaps just like the old time. But before that happens, some serious problems like the mod flood from one person & the difficulty in using search feature to find specific items or exclude some keywords might need to be solved first, I think. The mod flood could affect people who contribute in putting some of their mods here & visitors can relate with that, like the less people putting some mods, the less visitors would pay a visit. & visitors who can't search the items they're looking for because there's no specific search or sorting method might get tired after scrolling several times & going to several pages of search results only to find mods from one person (like, there's no "only" things in workshop when searching items, if you know what I meant).

Well, I hope that the admin & staff could take some consideration after reading this discussion, as it's a good thing to still have some members showing their care through worrying & complaining about some problems.

  • I'm almost 100% in agreement with you, I just don't think re-uploading is really any kind of solution compared to a section just for requested mods. The reason is then you get into a situation where the person re-uploading is competing with another modder that released their mod who naturally doesn't want their mod buried. And then if can be a tit-for-tat situation with modders constantly re-uploading their mod(s) to get them some attention.

Well, hopefully management will take our opinions into consideration.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Sounds good to me. I have been wondering if there's a mod that allows laser sights from the starting point of a campaign.

  • @NonnyFox:
It's not difficult to give laser sight in the beginning of chapter. The laser sight bonus can be triggered when a survivor leaves saferoom & it only needs simple scripts to make it. It's also possible to make it so that each time a survivor picks any primary gun, laser sight will be added to the gun.

Btw if you want to make some requests, probably you can add a new topic about your requests here on discussion section, for now. I hope that next time there would be a new section special for requested mods or "request" official tag, so that people can search requested mods in one place.
